When bdr starts any new SEO campaign we make sure your site is easily accessible and shows the major search engines everything they need to see in order to rank the site highly.
One of the most popular things we have to implement on our client’s sites is URL canonicalization or URL normalization as it is also known as. Basically speaking, it is the process of standardising your URL's. From an SEO point of view it is useful to use this method so search engines can prioritise web pages and avoid indexing duplicate content which is harmful.
Let’s use an example.
www.bdrlondon.com
bdrlondon.com/
www.bdrlondon.com/home
The above URLs may seem like the same page; however, these may all have different content. From an SEO standpoint this is not ideal. So we employ canonicalization to direct the search engines to the most preferred pages or to standardise URLs for consistency throughout.
These include a 301 permanent redirect this means if someone types in http://bdrlondon.com/ you can permanently re-direct them using a 301 to http://www.bdrlondon.com, if that’s the desired default URL. There are also other reasons to canonicalize URLs. You may want to utilise canonicalization to remove trailing slashes or to convert upper case URLs to lower case. Another popular use is to use it to remove session IDs.
We also make sure we use standardised links throughout the whole site for our internal linking. This avoids confusion and provides consistency. Instead of using two URL structures such as www.bdrlondon.com and bdrlondon.com we only use www.bdrlondon.com throughout all of our internal links.
