How good is Google at SEO

If Google were an SEO agency how good would they be? This is an interesting video by Matt Cutts which examines some of the basic SEO optimisation techniques Google do not follow on their own Google properties. I like the part where he shows a slide of what Google would look like if it was optimised for the search engines.

The exact Google algorithm is a well guarded secret however Google do release SEO best practice guidelines designed to help all webmasters and SEO agencies.

If you follow the guidelines and use a bit of common sense you will find with time your website's rakings will improve. There are things you can do to speed up the improvement in your rankings but generally it takes time to see major improvements in your search engine position. There are a number of reasons why this is.

If you are a new website depending on what industry you are in and how quick your market was to adopt the web as a sales and information channel you are going to be playing catch up. Domain age has a big impact on authority and older domains can see faster improvements in rank once an SEO cmapaign has started. Some of your competitors will have hundreds of indexed pages and even thousands of quality back links which in some instances have been collected over a 10 year period. Do not fear though it is still possible to get first page rankings you must be patient though. If it was easy to get onto the first page of Google think of all the rubbish that would appear for searches you make.

Google only want to provide their searchers with quality relevant pages which will bo of good use, it is probably the main reason the search engine is so popular.  Think of it this way if you are searching for an SEO agency you trust Google to return the most releveant results i.e. those companies who are SEO agencies. You can also rely on the fact that because Google only returns websites which are designed and built well and that have some authority on the web you can rest assured you will find quality results. This will be the case for what ever service or product you are searching for.
