SEO Services: Rich Snippets

A large part of providing a good SEO service is to drive relevant traffic to a client's site. Rich Snippets are a recent Google development which takes a snippet of information from a web page and displays it on the SERPs. Many Internet advertising agencies are now aware of Rich Snippets, but how can it be used to improve the relevancy of organic results?

Using the example from Google's webmaster blog you will see a Rich Snippet below.

Rich Snippets

Google states that Rich Snippets will enable users to conveniently read a small summary snippet of information about a product or person. This will save the user time and help them distinguish relevant and non-relevant information on the SERPs.  As you can see from the above example the rich snippet shows how many reviews of the product are on the page the average score out of 5 stars as well as a brief summary of the reviews.

Rich Snippets as far as I know is one of the first steps that Google is openly stepping towards the semantic web. Rich Snippets uses RDFA and Micro Formats mark up languages to pull the information. Both of these are being used by people providing SEO services to provide semantic results. At the moment the vocabularies available are limited, however, I'm sure in the future we will see these developing over time. For anyone offering a SEO service this means adding these mark up languages to their arsenal of SEO skills. Google says that Rich snippets will greatly improve click through rates for sites which in turn means better quality traffic.

Rich Snippets is being released gradually and the flexibility of the vocabularies available is quite limited, however, it will be interesting to see how it develops over time. In my opinion this is just the start and it has lots of potential.
